It’s kind of like picking a scab. It you keep picking at it, the wound can take twice or even three times as long to heal, it can get infected, it will fester, and typically you end up with a bigger scar. I’m not advocating ignoring, or avoiding, dealing with things that require your attention. I am recommending that you put it down and leave it in the past. As you learn and grow in the present you’re going to have a different perspective when you revisit the past. This fresh perspective can aid in healing, forgiving, and releasing the pain. *tip* not every pain from the past has to be dragged out, relived, and interrogated to be released.

You will know that you are choosing quiet, reflection, and greater peace, those around you may decide you are choosing to not respond. You can let them know in a word or two that you are not responding at this time. I read and hear many times that choosing to not respond is in-action, not good enough, blah, blah, blah. With so much stimuli coming at you in any given day the best way to stay present, connected, and experiencing peace is to become extremely specific in what you do and do not put energy and a response into. This one might take some practice but choosing to put most things down will increase the energy and focus you have for the things that matter most.

When something happens do you suppress your response or process through your response? Do you reject what is happening or do you reflect on the reasons that brought you to this point? Do you react or respond? Jump to action or pause and prepare your response?

If things are working out great in all areas of your life ignore this keep doing what you are doing. If there are areas where you are not getting the results that you would like moving through these questions with yourself will be helpful in guiding you towards a different way of processing through how you are currently interacting with life, and how to shift the results. When you are making a decision are you checking in with your soul? Sometimes this happens quick and feels easy other times, it can be much harder because of all the extra voices you can end up with in your head. Some of the voices are real; spouses, friends, family, neighbors, co-workers etc. some of the voices are the ones we drag around out of habit (I like to refer to them as the itty bitty shitty committee, rarely are they helpful), some come from the things we are interacting with such as social media, news, podcasts… With all these extra influences it can feel challenging to sift through other’s opinions and connect with our own. Next time you find yourself looking for an answer from your soul, put one hand on your heart, one on your belly, and repeat: it is well with my soul. This repetition will help drown out the other voices and when you are ready to be still, be quiet, and wait, your soul will speak to you.

I knew a little about sports growing up then I married a sports guy. I wouldn’t say I know everything now, but I have learned that a team that plays from an offensive strategy it’s far more successful than the team playing from defense. You are the same. If you are playing and strategizing from what it is that you hope for versus how to avoid what you fear you’re going to feel more successful. There are so many options between what you fear and what you hope for, simply avoiding what you don’t want to have happen doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll land where you would like. Life is on your side, make it part of your offense not something you are defending yourself against.

You know the saying growth happens outside your comfort zone, here’s the deal, you don’t have to seek discomfort to know that what you are doing will bring about change. As a matter of fact if you are pushing to that point you’re most likely taking on to much and the change you are seeking will not be sustainable because no one likes to feel discomfort for to long. Recognize that when making small changes you shift you habits and patterns and this will make you feel the discomfort, not because it’s necessary, but because it’s different. How you know it’s enough? Uncomfortable/discomfort. Too much? Anxiety/stress Don’t confuse the two.

Sure, there are a lot of places where we know change would be beneficial, but sometimes there’s places that we don’t. Those places are typically the key to the thing we are looking for, especially when we start to feel as if we have looked and done everything. I often tell clients to look in the nevers. All the things they’ve declared either publicly or to themselves that they would never do. It doesn’t mean that by examining the never that you’ll do it, but the reason behind the never often hold the key to what’s keeping you from shifting. Making the decisions to go there takes courage. I know you’ve got it in you, do you believe me?

This is something I like to remind myself and others when it seems like everything or the very big important thing is falling apart or not working out. It’s may feel like it’s the end of the world, but it’s not. Think of other things that felt this way, that have passed that you have moved forward from.

When you come to the end of a street you make a choice, left, right, or turn around. With a little patience and practice you'll be able to see the end of something as an opportunity, what you do with that opportunity is up to you and your attitude.

Focus your energy and intention on what it is that you would like to feel. If you are already experiencing it offer gratitude. If you are not yet experiencing it ask, ask to recognize it in others, ask to receive and be open to how it shows up.

This is hanging on the bathroom wall so you get to read it while you’re sitting on the throne. I figure there’s no better place to practice saying really nice things to yourself. I know that my kids are captive there at least once or twice a day, and the saying my mom had hanging on our bathroom wall growing up still reverberates in my head, I can’t remember exactly how it goes but it was a little poem with a reminder that small kindnesses have a big ripple effect.

I going to attach this as a pdf if you want to print it out… If I am being honest this exact one isn’t hanging in the bathroom, it’s one I hand drew, with sharpies, in the ROY G BIV order (red orange yellow green blue indigo violet) maybe it’s time for an update around here too!

When you are deciding what feels like enough to you, make sure that you are checking in with you and not making your decisions based on what you perceive is enough to someone else.

Not only does comparing rob you of your own personal joy, it may send you off working towards someone else’s goals, you may be so awesome that you reach these goals, and what happens if once your get there it’s not what you wanted it’s what someone else did?

This is where learning who you are and what makes you feel joy is so important. What brought you joy when you were 8 years old? I promise there are answers for you in that right now.

Mine was service, for better or worse I am hard wired to to think about serving others. My new task? Learning how to serve myself!

Allow yourself the space to trust that enough will be sufficient.

Something your may not have considered is that there isn’t a set definition of what enough is, you get to make this decision.

The benefit of making this decision is that it creates a boundary for you, gives you a space for acceptance, a way to “arrive”, a method to stop working harder and rids you of the belief that once you get there life will be better than it is here.

Go and be enough. Enough Joy. Enough patience. Enough Knowledge. Enough kindness. Enough humility. Enough self love to ask for and receive help.

Somewhere along the way we’ve been sold on the notion that we should be striving for grandiosity, playing big, going after it all.

What got lost in all this motivational speaking and hype is the peace and happiness that can come from finding the joy in the plain, simple, and ordinary.

Sure you can do and be and seek to have it all, it doesn’t mean you have to or you’ll like it once you get there.

Do you show up knowing who you are, knowing that not everyone is going to approve, knowing there is going to be judgement, also knowing that you are good with who you are, and where you are at right now, and knowing that your worth and value does not come from what others think and say, but it comes from you?

Spend some time this week paying attention to what you are focused on when you are around others. Is it what you think they are thinking or is it focused on knowing that you are who you are.

When’s the last time you intentional set aside time to do something fun? It doesn’t have to be big like sky diving, but something more than a quick laugh at a meme, should do the trick.

If there’s something on your mind, if it’s sitting in the passenger seat constantly remaining your it’s there, or if you’ve pushed it to the back where you are thinking about it but the weight is still there, having a good laugh, enjoying the company of friends, watch the funny movie, taking a breather and having fun is a great way to feel refreshed when you get back to the tasks at hand.

I’ll admit I’ve walked away from a stack of dirty dishes more than once, good news? It was waiting for me when I came back to it, even better news? I was in a much better space to tackle the task when I returned!

This is a good one to read out loud. I’ll be you have no problem being the answer to someone’s prayer (whether you heard the prayer or not!). When you see that someone requires assistance you can’t help yourself, you jump in and lend a hand.

What I want to know is, how good are you at asking for and receiving help? Do you not ask because you don’t think there’s anyone out there to answer the call? Do you not speak up because you’re afraid of what others with think? Do you think it seems silly that what you would like help with isn’t a “big deal”? Take a moment to think about an area you’d like help, say a little prayer, and watch and see what happens. Get rid of the expectation of how you believe it should be answer have fun and be surprised!

Oh, the law of circulation what goes around comes around, receive the goodness you’ve offered in return, it’s good for your soul.

The truth is, sometimes the best solution to a tough problem is taking a break, putting it down, walking a way, doing something different, and coming back with a fresh perspective.

You are tough enough to solve the problem before you, you are smart enough, and have the resources you require to get things done. The problem you might be facing is not stepping back to see everything that is right in front of you. If it feels like too much, put it down and take a walk listen to a frivolous podcast and wave to the people you pass on your way.

Truthfully, it’s happened more than once that the solution I was seeking found me in the most unlikely ways, give yourself the opportunity to be surprised by how and when the answers show up!

(I just looked at yesterdays journal prompt, and had a chuckle! We recently adopted 2 6 month old kittens and they LOVE to come and work with me! I keep thinking I’ve double checked all their “Help” and they keep sneaking it in!)

Do you know that Carly Simon song? It’s a favorite of mind, and it immediately came to mind after I uploaded this thought, if you haven’t go listen it’s an oldie but a goodie You Have to Hurt.

I think you’ve probably heard the saying change happens when the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of changing. If you haven’t now you have :)

So wise for so many reasons, a big one? Acknowledging that change isn’t easy, and it might hurt a little bit more than you want it to. Knowing change would benefit you, and putting into the motion the necessary things for the change to happen are two different zones. Don’t get stuck in the in the knowing, take that energy of resisting the change and put it towards determining the action steps and begin taking those steps.

I know you know this, but do you believe it, and live it? I was thinking about this in regards to my current feelings about making dinner. I have been in charge of dinner for 22 years now, and truth be told I am burned out. I did a quick personal inventory and realized I didn’t require a better system, I required a break!

After that quick look I noticed the 4 children living in my home that were all of age and capability to be in charge of making dinner one night a week. I quickly let them know of the new dinner protocol and they all eagerly jumped in. I’m not going to lie I’ve had a few moments of guilt, old habits die hard, but everyone is happy to be eating actual meals for dinner again, I am happy to not be the one making them, and we all got some bonus points for stepping down (me), stepping up (them), asking for AND receiving help (both me).
